Relative Prices and Investment: an Essay on Resource Allocation
نویسنده
چکیده
In this essay the mainstream story about how resources are allocated in a market economy is challenged. The conventional view is that a change in relative prices leads to a change in the composition of output as a result of a reallocation of the stock of primary factors of production (land, labor and capital). No investment is required. This is possible, however, only if the primary factors of production are homogeneous and hence highly mobile. If land, labor and capital are heterogeneous and specific to particular economic activities, resources will not be mobile and the ability of an economy to respond to price incentives will be highly dependent on the rate of investment in natural, physical and human capital. The argument is illustrated by considering the response of economic agents to changes in the relative price of annual and permanent crops, a change in agriculture’s terms of trade, structural adjustment and trade liberalization in sub-Saharan Africa and systemic change from plan to market in the former Soviet Union. “The time has come, the walrus said, to speak of many things: of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings.”

An Algorithm for Resource Allocation through the Classification of DMUs
Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a non-parametric method for assessing relative efficiency of decision-making units (DMUs). Every single decision-maker with the use of inputs produces outputs. These decision-making units will be defined by the production possibility set. Resource allocation to DMUs is one of the concerns of managers since managers can employ the results of this process to a...
متن کاملThe Effect of Subsidized Entry in Multi-Unit Capacity Auctions with Allocation Externalities
This paper examines the effect of subsidized entry of electricity generation capacity on the outcome of centralized capacity auctions. Subsidized entry suppresses capacity prices and induces an inefficient allocation of capacity. Subsidized entry also alters the generation portfolio determined by the capacity auction, leading to lower expected electricity prices in subsequent market interaction...

Conventional wisdom says that it takes ever increasing marketing budgets and/or lower prices to create sustained growth in sales, which may or may not be profitable in the long run. However, some documented cases and conceptual evidence suggest that marketing spending or prices can exhibit hysteresis in market response, a condition where temporary changes in the marketing mix are associated wit...

Although sectoral...
